If your hospital is under 200 beds, you will find our first article below of particular interest. In evaluating newer options for hospital electronic health records (EHRs) in this size category, MEDITECH Expanse was reported to be the top performer by KLAS. Expanse is steadily gaining traction and its reputation is growing.
On a separate note, I recently had the opportunity to participate in a discussion between MEDITECH and one of their largest clients, where MEDITECH reviewed development plans for a variety of applications over the next 12-18 months. We continue to be impressed with the development plans that address both current and future needs of healthcare organizations. Just one example is the plan for pharmacogenomics that will better integrate genetic testing results into patient care workflows.
If you have interest in MEDITECH’s development plans, we expect these will be covered at the annual Physician/CIO Forum to be held September 18-19 at MEDITECH’s Foxborough, MA location. Additional information and registration for the Forum can be found here.

The following was reported by HIStalk.com on June 5 (italics added by NHA to emphasize key points):
A KLAS report covering recently announced inpatient EHRs for under-200 bed hospitals finds that only Athenahealth and Meditech have brought customers live, with those vendors having signed 115+ hospitals each. Just three hospitals each have contracted for ECW’s inpatient system and Epic Sonnet. Athenahealth customers worry about significant product functionality gaps (mostly clinical) and that the company has paused sales of the inpatient product during its corporate turmoil, with 22 hospitals cancelling their contracts in the past two years. Meditech Expanse earns high marks in both administrative and clinical areas, as does the company’s cost transparency. KLAS notes that Epic Sonnet isn’t really intended for small hospitals, but rather larger ones that are willing to start off with less functionality or lower cost with plans to eventually move up to the full Epic product, with Community Connect as provided by larger hospitals (rather than Epic itself) being the only real small-hospital option. ECW is losing prospects, most of them running CPSI or Allscripts Paragon, to other vendors due to delays in bringing any sites live. The bottom line is: (a) Meditech Expanse is the only successful new product; and (b) it’s not easy for ambulatory EHR companies to develop and implement a successful inpatient product.
The following key findings from the report are noted on the KLAS website:

The “Emerging Acute Care EMRs 2019” KLAS report referenced above is very encouraging for smaller hospitals running or considering migrating to MEDITECH Expanse. However, the question was raised regarding larger organizations. We are pleased to report we have worked with many large organizations that are LIVE and happy with Expanse. Here are profiles on three of those clients:
Avera Health, Sioux Falls, SD
Avera is rolling out Expanse Acute and Ambulatory throughout the health system, with the first wave LIVE since 2018. With 1,305 beds and more than 300 locations, they have 700+ employed physicians and mid-level providers, and more than 15,000 users. The Avera environment is very complex in terms of the types of facilities and current application system support. It includes:
Emanate Health (formally Citrus Valley Health Partners), West Covina, CA
Emanate Health went LIVE with Expanse on April 1, 2019, with Ambulatory going LIVE this month.
The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, NJ
The Valley Hospital has been LIVE with 6.1 for several years and is set to Go-LIVE with Expanse Acute in the fall of 2019.
NHA and MEDITECH can provide examples of many other large, complex organizations that are LIVE and successful with Expanse. If you need more information, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or reach out to your MEDITECH sales representative.
We are pleased to announce Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital of East York, Ontario went LIVE on June 1 with a migration from MEDITECH C/S 5.66 to Expanse, including Acute and Ambulatory. Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, Holland Bloorview is a top 40 Canadian research hospital and the largest children’s rehabilitation hospital in Canada.
With the implementation of MEDITECH Expanse, Holland Bloorview is well positioned to achieve HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) Stage 7. Further, this organization is the first to bring LIVE MEDITECH’s new Ambulatory system in Canada! The integration of patient data across the continuum of care is expected to deliver significant improvements to the quality and efficiency of patient care.
Holland Bloorview provides EMR hosting for ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development, the largest children’s treatment centre in Ontario, which will Go-LIVE with MEDITECH Expanse September 1, 2019. NHA is pleased to be the MEDITECH READY-certified consulting firm for this project.
To support customers looking to optimize their Leapfrog grades, MEDITECH recently published resources providing education about the survey requirements and advising customers on recommended workflows and system settings. Please review MEDITECH’s Leapfrog Survey Recommendations for a general survey overview and recommendations for each of the nine survey sections. They also created Knowledge Base (KB) 62236, directing customers to platform-specific KB articles.
MEDITECH’s 2019 Nurse Forum was held in Foxborough, MA last month. Our compliments to the MEDITECH team, led by Cathy Turner, in doing a phenomenal job with this conference. In our opinion, it gets better each year. This year’s Nurse Forum centered on Innovative Care Coordination with several presentations focusing on this topic.
MEDITECH announced they are now offering Philips integration (in addition to GE, OBIX and PeriGen) for sites looking to integrate MEDITECH with fetal monitoring systems. They also announced a new Labor & Delivery suite to be available in Q1 of 2020 for Expanse clients, which will include such features as L&D desktop, flowsheet, widgets, mother/baby query recall, mother/baby status board and integration with SUR for c-section documentation. An early adopter will be chosen by the end of this summer.
MEDITECH recently published a blog post highlighting their takeaways from this event. If you are interested in reviewing or downloading any of the presentations, please visit MEDITECH’s event page. Here are several we found of interest (password needed):
We are pleased to share the following testimonial from one of our Expanse clients:
“I very much appreciated NHA’s expertise to help Peterson Health achieve excellence throughout our MEDITECH Expanse build, training and implementation processes. We were impressed with our project manager’s intelligence, tenacity, and boundless energy. Because of her project leadership, and the consultants and various trainers who provided physician support during go-LIVE, we were able to achieve success.”
