With our entry into Canada, this newsletter will begin covering topics that are specific to the unique interests of this market. We were recently asked to give an overview of MEDITECH’s position in the EHR marketplace. Here are our thoughts:
As noted in a May 30 post on the MEDITECH website, “…Building on a successful 2017, which saw MEDITECH sign 92 organizations for Expanse, 2018 is showing no signs of slowing down. Over the past several months, MEDITECH has signed a number of new and current customers to move into the future with MEDITECH Expanse, and take healthcare innovation as well as quality to a new level…”
Our observations of the market concur with this assessment.
David Wittig has joined NHA’s business development team and will lead expansion efforts in Canada. David is a recognized results-oriented professional and a respected leader with more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare information technology industry. His experience has been gained through progressive roles in account management, business development, project management, and management consulting, working with healthcare organizations throughout Canada.
According to David LaFontaine, senior vice president, “David was our top choice for this newly created role due to his impressive background in healthcare IT, his strong customer focus, and his innate ability to develop effective relationships throughout all levels of healthcare organizations. He is a proven leader with exceptional project leadership skills, as exhibited during his deployment of MEDITECH Expanse/6.x technology in several multi-facility and territory-wide implementations over the last eight years.”
Prior to joining NHA, David served as principal/director of business development at LikeMinds Consulting where he worked with provincial and federal government funding agencies, provincial/territory leadership, and regional health authorities to enhance the delivery of healthcare. He supported and led multiple Canadian clients through vendor management from project inception, to Go-LIVE and into operations. Previous to LikeMinds, David held leadership roles at Philips Healthcare, Agfa Healthcare, Sudbury Regional Hospital, General Electric Medical and a prominent Canadian-based healthcare IT consulting firm.
In June 2015, KLAS issued a special report entitled “Implementation Potholes 2015 – How to Smooth Out the Ride.” In our July 2015 newsletter, we highlighted key aspects of this report, which today remain quite relevant. Here is an excerpt from that newsletter:
If you are planning to move to 6.1, you may find KLAS’ newly released special study of interest. “Implementation Potholes 2015: How to Smooth Out the Ride” covers best practices for implementations of major EHR vendors and identifies frequent major issues.
In our opinion, the issues raised during this study reflect challenges that MEDITECH’s READY implementation methodology was designed to address. The KLAS study reinforces the tenets of the READY model and validates the importance of experienced assistance with large and complex projects. Below is an excerpt from the KLAS study. “Organizations may be reluctant to leverage a third-party implementation firm, but data shows that these firms are often the key for consistent implementation success. Providers who have a firm play a significant role in their implementation rate their overall satisfaction with their core EMR vendor five points higher (on average) than those who don’t utilize a third-party firm. These firms are often involved in providing key leadership, tools and methodology, and a team of consultants. While third-party firms at times slow down implementations and increase overall costs, they increase the likelihood of seamless and successful go-lives.”
During the study, KLAS evaluated the thirteen consulting companies in the industry that provide project management and full implementation services. Navin, Haffty & Associates (NHA) was evaluated on the basis of six READY implementations and was one of four firms (out of all thirteen) with the highest level of client satisfaction.
“Providers looking for a firm that can play a large role in implementing MEDITECH look to Dell Services, Impact Advisors, NHA, and Xerox for help. Among these firms, NHA is doing the most large-enterprise implementation leadership projects. NHA has grown noticeably over the years and is 100% dedicated to MEDITECH work.”
Since this article was published three years ago, MEDITECH has certified about a dozen other firms. As you can see from this article in 2015, there have been some changes in those companies providing these services. Further, while some companies have built experience and references, other certified companies have gone through transitions. You might consider company longevity and stability in this market as one criteria for selecting a consulting partner. NHA continues to be the largest MEDITECH consulting company with significantly higher KLAS rankings and higher KLAS Konfidence levels than any other MEDITECH consulting company.
The following excerpt from MEDITECH’s website provides a fascinating glimpse at how the Ministry of Health in Botswana is utilizing MEDITECH:
The Ministry of Health in Botswana seeks to provide healthcare to all Botswana within a five kilometre radius. Over 60% of Botswana access healthcare at extremely remote and rural health posts, with little to no connectivity or electricity supply. Still, healthcare providers are proactively using MEDITECH to maintain longitudinal health records for every citizen.
