Navin, Haffty and Associates (NHA) is pleased to announce we are now offering consulting services to the Canadian MEDITECH market. As many of you know, we have traditionally focused on the U.S. as our primary geographic market, and we have a very strong footprint in the MEDITECH 6.1 and Web Enterprise Health Record (EHR) market across the U.S. Our decision to enter Canada is largely based on MEDITECH’s recent growth and expansion of its 6.1 and Web EHR throughout the Canadian provinces.
We are entering the Canadian market at a very exciting time and are well positioned to expand our services to provide MEDITECH’s Canadian customer base with access to the largest and most experienced 6.1 and Web EHR consulting firm.
Our expansion coincides with the signing of our first Canadian client where we will lead the implementation of the advanced clinicals suite of products as part of a health system’s migration from MEDITECH 6.x to the new Web EHR platform.

Open Notes is “…a growing international movement that offers patients easy online access to their clinical notes, typically through a patient portal. Written by doctors, nurses, therapists, or other healthcare professionals to describe interactions with patients, notes are part of the medical record. They have various names: visit notes, clinic notes, progress notes, or chart notes, to name a few. But when patients are invited to read these notes, they become OpenNotes…” A recent blog post on the MEDITECH website has ignited some awareness that MEDITECH has supported the ability for customers to share OpenNotes in all platforms via the MEDITECH Patient Portal. OpenNotes is a major component of the patient experience and satisfaction efforts and MEDITECH has been collaborating directly with the folks at OpenNotes to raise awareness of this functionality and is stepping up education efforts with their customers.
MEDITECH implementation teams have always strongly recommended that customers share all patient data within the portal and are now adding “Best Practices” regarding OpenNotes. A “Best Practice” document around this topic was recently published and is now available for customers.
MEDITECH talks regularly with the leadership team from OpenNotes and recently learned that they created a survey for healthcare organizations who wish to share their utilization of OpenNotes. MEDITECH customers currently using OpenNotes are encouraged to share their experience with the OpenNotes team by completing a generic survey. The information gathered via these surveys is kept in their internal database. OpenNotes gathers survey responses to learn more about how OpenNotes is implemented and used, tracking trends, challenges, etc. OpenNotes also asks for the number of patients registered on the portal. OpenNotes aggregates all of these portal registration numbers across all launched systems to give an estimate of the number of patients with access to notes.
MEDITECH will be including more discussions on the benefits and setup of OpenNotes in upcoming optimizations and trainings starting in March. There will also be a Doctors’ Hours session to discuss OpenNotes from a provider perspective. Dates will be released soon. Customers can contact their portal specialist for more information.
In addition to these optimization trainings for existing customers, MEDITECH will be sponsoring an educational webinar on OpenNotes on March 20, open to anyone who wishes to learn more. Continue to check MEDITECH’s events page for updates and registration instructions.
Compliance with Stage 3 Meaningful Use (MU) requirements will begin on January 1, 2019, with a 365-day reporting period during calendar year 2019. (Note that Stage 3 is optional for this year [CY 2018] for any continuous 90-day period.)
While the number of objectives to be met has been slimmed down to six, most include multiple measures, each requiring considerable preparation time. There are five required functions that will be new to most facilities and will require planning and effort. These include:

MU Stage 3 involves changes to all criteria and will require significant effort. Failure to attest to Stage 3 requirements will result in a reduction in the CMS Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) annual increase.
