Last month we announced NHA reached a milestone with our 50th MEDITECH READY Go-LIVE. We invite you to go to our website to read the full announcement. We are thankful to the many clients that have put their trust in us. Our success has been affirmed by both KLAS and more recently, Black Book Market Research.
NHA brings one or more hospitals LIVE on MEDITECH Expanse nearly each month. We are pleased with the consistency and success our clients have achieved. Towards this end, I am sharing two comments I received following successful November 1 Go-LIVEs.
“Thank you for a job well done! Your consultants are outstanding to work with and represent NHA in the most excellent way. We are thankful for the work completed by NHA and the partnership we have shared. As a small rural PPS hospital in the southeast corner of Kansas we’ve had our struggles this past year, but we are very proud to have accomplished our MEDITECH Expanse Go-LIVE. I am extremely pleased with our collective teams and the work that has been accomplished. Thank you for listening, guiding and assisting us through this great task.”

“I want to thank you and the Navin Haffty team for being such great partners. I say partners because that is exactly what you are. You shared in the ups and downs of the project as if it were your own. You were completely engaged from the start. You were an extension of our workforce but brought so much more to bear. Whenever we had a problem, the NHA team was there to assist. I’ve never worked with NHA in the past but have always heard good reviews from colleagues. We really wanted the best in the business for our project and that is exactly what we got. You and your team have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure our success and we thank you. In my opinion, you are the best of the best. We’re feeling pretty pumped right now with our success and hopefully you are too because we did it together so THANK YOU!”

MEDITECH recently introduced “Greenfield,” its app development environment intended to fuel the building and adoption of mobile apps. This is an exciting and significant announcement and we wanted to share some additional information:
What is Greenfield?
Greenfield is an open app development environment, commonly referred to as a sandbox or playground, where MEDITECH Expanse customers and third-party developers can create mobile apps using RESTful APIs, including FHIR, to increase the value of the MEDITECH EHR as well as drive community enrichment and growth via innovation. Greenfield is a natural extension of MEDITECH’s efforts around web technology.
Why Did MEDITECH Create Greenfield?
Based on today’s interoperability trends and market demand for open, interoperable EHRs, it is important for MEDITECH, as a leader in interoperability, to make APIs available for mobile creation. Further, this is a logical next step to make better use of Expanse and its web capabilities to continue to improve the user experience. This adds value to the MEDITECH Expanse EHR, delivering efficiencies by sharing resources to support overall community growth and improvement with access to innovative technology.
Why Does This Matter to Hospitals?
Expanse customers can take advantage of RESTful APIs, including FHIR, to interact with mobile apps specifically designed for their providers, patients and consumers. For example, hospitals may create mobile apps to target self-care initiatives and support population health management goals for their communities.
NHA Research Studies
NHA has completed several research studies showing how MEDITECH compares with other EHR vendors on quality and cost measures. These studies are based on data submitted to the U.S. government by all U.S. hospitals and have relevance to Canadian hospitals as findings are indicative of universal trends.
The first study compares quality measures of hospitals using MEDITECH to those using Cerner or Epic. It shows fewer MEDITECH hospitals experienced penalties for hospital acquired conditions than hospitals using other vendors’ EHRs. It also shows similar findings regarding readmission penalties. A separate study found hospitals implementing MEDITECH 6.x improved profitability compared to those implementing Cerner or Epic. While Canadian and U.S. healthcare systems are different, we believe the same concerns about patient safety, quality and financial stewardship are important to Canadian hospitals. Visit our website to view the studies. We are glad to review the details with anyone interested. Email us at email@example.com for follow-up.
KLAS Arch Collaborative
Last month we presented highlights from the MEDITECH Physician/CIO Forum. One of the most valuable sessions was presented by Taylor Davis of KLAS on the Arch Collaborative, which focused on their recent “Best Practices” study on EMR adoption and satisfaction. We want to make our Canadian readers aware their database includes several Canadian hospitals. If you are considering implementing MEDITECH’s advanced clinical applications (with the involvement of physicians) you will find this study useful and your participation is encouraged. He shared the following keys to success for satisfied physicians (reference last month’s newsletter for the full article):
According to KLAS: “The Arch Collaborative is an effort to measure EHR user experience across organizations and to collaborate across organizations and improve based on those efforts. Organizations that are new to the Arch Collaborative have an option to measure their clinicians’ experience at no cost.”
Several of you have asked us to clarify the differences between version 6.15 and Expanse.
MEDITECH defines Expanse as:
“Our fully interoperable web-based platform navigates the care continuum with unparalleled confidence, so you can see the full picture and treat the whole patient the way you want to — easily and efficiently. One EHR, no limits. Welcome to the new vision of healthcare.”
Expanse is intended to be the web-based version of MEDITECH’s software, and was previously referred to when speaking about Web Ambulatory, Web Acute and Web ED. Expanse was originated specifically after release 6.16. Expanse can allow all users to access the MEDITECH EHR via a URL from a browser, however, not every site is fully web-deployed. MEDITECH’s implementation best practices do recommend full web-deployment, and with recent LIVE customers, we are seeing an increased deployment of web functionality when going LIVE with Expanse.
Migrating to Expanse from 6.15 can be unique based on each site’s situation (code/customs, and update content versioning, etc.) There are also new M-tads that need to be pushed out to each site as part of the migration. As we all know, the devil is in the detail so it’s always wise to double check when planning any PPack updates.
Any migration to Expanse has technical components at the server and device evaluation levels. To web enable the software, there is a need for hardware to be added and services to be enabled. Additionally security and deployment must be evaluated. More importantly, the web enables a level of mobility that can have significant benefits, but requires an evaluation of workflow processes and devices to support mobility. This is an opportunity to create efficiencies for physicians but requires planning and project management.
All new sites are receiving the Expanse software. For any site that needs to update to the correct PPack, a downtime is required. For the definitive source, visit MEDITECH’s website.
In our September newsletter we shared the news that NHA received the #1 ranking in Black Book Market Research’s survey of MEDITECH consulting firms for 2018. We want to share a few details from this study:
Click here to read more about NHA’s recognition in the Black Book study.
Thanks to those who have responded to surveys conducted by Black Book and KLAS. We appreciate the high ratings and praise we continue to receive from you.
Thank you to the 100+ people who have already listened to the recent podcast on EHR value and sustainability conducted by MEDITECH’s Chris Policano and John Haffty. In the podcast, Chris and John discuss a variety of topics including cost discrepancies between the major EHR vendors, and NHA research studies showing paying more for an EHR does not guarantee better outcomes. These findings coincide with KLAS’ Arch Collaborative study which documents there is no correlation between EHR spending and physician satisfaction.
Here is the response from a vice president of a large health system after listening to the podcast: “Giving this a full listen today. I am truly appreciating what you had to offer. Thank you for this!”
A long-time supporter of The Salvation Army, NHA recently continued its support of the organization’s Worcester, Massachusetts chapter with a donation of refurbished laptops to the chapter’s Bridging the Gap program. Bridging the Gap provides teenagers safe alternatives to violent and risky behavior and educates court-involved youth on how to make better decisions and attain a more promising future. The laptops will be used in Worcester area classrooms to assist in these education efforts.
Pictured below: The Salvation Army’s Major Paul Pelletier with one of the donated laptops in front of a painting created and contributed by NHA employees.
We would like to share recent commentary collected by KLAS from organizations where we are providing services:
“NHA provided our physicians and IT staff with guidance during the implementation of our new ambulatory solution. The resources from NHA had deeper knowledge than our vendor’s resources could provide. They were very supportive, and they provided us with a sense of reality we didn’t have. NHA’s resources were also very good at helping our specialties make process changes that were necessary for success.” – CIO
“We tried working with other consulting firms a number of years ago, and we discovered that none of them knew MEDITECH’s systems as well as NHA. They have become our go-to firm when we need help. We can rely on NHA to provide us with the people we need, and we are always happy with their work.” – CIO
