As a member of the MEDITECH community, it’s important to get out of your environment and meet with other CIOs, and MEDITECH, in the various forums. I was at HIMSS in February and will attend the MEDITECH Physician/CIO Forum in September. Other members of NHA’s leadership team will be at the MUSE Inspire Conference and the e-Health Conference and Tradeshow in May, as well as the MEDITECH Nurse Forum in June. (We are aware MEDITECH held its inaugural Strategic Leadership Summit earlier this month in California.) It can be challenging to find time for networking, but there is nothing like face-to-face discussions with your peers. Learning from others as well as staying current on what MEDITECH offers is worth the time. You will find more information on these conferences in this month’s newsletter.
Hope to see you at one of these events!

One of the goals of this newsletter is to keep you informed of MEDITECH’s current and future plans. Toward this goal, we want to direct you to a March 20 blog post written by MEDITECH president Howard Messing. It is the first of two parts under the theme: “Using the cloud to ‘untether’ medicine from wired tech.” In this first part, he speaks to plans around cloud computing and mobility
MEDITECH’s release of a cloud-based, untethered EHR best aligns with the practice of healthcare today. Ubiquitous mobility via cloud computing creates the opportunity for timelier patient care as well as efficiencies that could not have been dreamed of just a few years ago.
However, for those of us who grew up in the MEDITECH world when MAGIC was the operating system, taking advantage of this web technology is far more complex than anything we imagined.
For most implementations, Expanse has gone smoothly, but we have seen issues arise. One site had an old domain controller in place from MAGIC that hadn’t been properly upgraded to fit Expanse. Another was using a 2 tier, rather than 3 tier environment, creating response time problems because Google Chrome was caching at the workstation level.
The value of a strong technology partner becomes evident when issues such as these are not quickly resolved. When evaluating firms, remember the savings of engaging the lowest priced solution may result in outcomes far costlier to your organization. There is nothing worse than downtime and slow response times after going through the effort to implement Expanse. Simply put, price does not equate to value.
Five Hospitals Come Together to Improve Patient Safety
Bedside Verification and electronic Medication Administration Record and are two key components for improving patient safety, a topic we have raised in prior issues. A recent posting about a project in Ontario describes their approach and success with implementing these at two organizations (representing five hospitals). From this posting:
In the hospital setting, accurate medication administration is one of the foundations of safe care, but clinical workarounds can create risks that can cause patient harm or injury. That’s why, in Southwestern Ontario, we embarked on an initiative that allowed two organizations totaling five hospital sites — Alexandra Marine & General Hospital (AMGH) and Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) (comprised of Clinton Public Hospital, St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, Seaforth Community Hospital and Stratford General Hospital) — to move from two different paper processes to a single electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) integrated with Bedside Verification (BV). This has enabled our clinicians to seamlessly incorporate barcode-assisted medication administrations (BCMA) into the patient care workflow.Click here to read the full story.

Prior to the conference, contact David Wittig to pre-arrange a meeting with NHA and learn how we are leading the way to successful MEDITECH Expanse implementations in Canada.
MEDITECH made the following announcement regarding MaaS:
MEDITECH is excited to announce MaaS (MEDITECH as a Service) is now available to community health systems. Offered initially to Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs), larger community health systems now have the opportunity to utilize MaaS and the many benefits that come with a cost-effective subscription to MEDITECH Expanse.
MaaS is a cloud-based EHR subscription that provides health systems with full access to Expanse, MEDITECH’s web-based platform. Specifically designed to reduce the complexity and cost of procuring, hosting, and maintaining a cutting-edge EHR system while improving efficiency and ensuring quality patient care, MaaS is an attractive option for organizations facing the many challenges within the current healthcare landscape…

We are pleased to share testimonials from two executives from Lane Regional Medical Center of Zachary, Louisiana, a client that recently went LIVE on MEDITECH Expanse with our support:
“Lane Regional Medical Center had a successful Go-LIVE with MEDITECH Expanse on February 1. Great job to our IS team lead by Paul Murphy, CIO. It is amazing the difference having the right talent manage a Go-LIVE such as this makes. Thank you to NHA for supporting us throughout this project. Your consulting staff is top notch. Lane was only down a few hours during the actual conversion. We were dropping claims on day 6…very successful conversion!!”
– Phil Hacker, Chief Financial Officer
“I want to thank the NHA team for being such a wonderful partner in our journey to implement MEDITECH Expanse. This was a huge project for our health system and critically important for the success of our organization. The NHA team members were rock stars throughout the project! With the help of NHA we had a very smooth Go-LIVE without any delays. We could not have achieved that without their expertise. The project management, clinical, and financial consultants that worked with us were top-notch and true experts in their fields.”
– Paul Murphy, Chief Information Officer
