Ambulatory represents a bold initiative for MEDITECH and this report gives a favorable review and an encouraging perspective for the future of this product. Veterans Day is a paid holiday at Navin, Haffty & Associates (as well as at MEDITECH) and has been since our inception in 2001. We believe the service and sacrifice provided by veterans and borne by their families is worthy of recognition, and providing the time off is a small gesture to demonstrate this appreciation. This became apparent to me when one of our first consultants, Bob Dixon (who has since retired), made me aware that for all the public statements made by organizations in support of veterans, ours was the first in his career to ever provide the day as a holiday.

We are starting to see a shift in priorities and focus for decision making that should be on your radar. The Meaningful Use incentives drove an emphasis on physician and clinical tools, functionality and usability. Now that much of this has been achieved, the demands on managing risk associated with payment for patient populations is leading to a renewed focus on revenue cycle tools, human resource management capabilities and supply chain management.

The recent major industry controversy surrounding a prominent EHR vendor and the implications surrounding their software certification has been widely publicized. Without naming the company involved, we assume the vast majority of our readers know the vendor, as well as many of the details around the recent settlement with the government. While the full extent of the impact this may have on their customers, as well as on the industry, remains to be seen, this is an opportune time to reflect on the true value of a vendor partner and the intangible, and often discounted, considerations when considering an EHR vendor.

The opioid crisis has raised issues regarding the responsibilities of hospitals and physicians to balance the need to manage pain with the risks of overprescribing. While there has been attention focused on the “frequent flyers” that present in multiple emergency departments, our industry is starting to identify behaviors that have contributed to this crisis.

This has been a difficult month for NHA. In the early morning of March 9th, a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed lanes into the path of a vehicle carrying three of our consultants. Tragically, two of our consultants, Kimberly Lee and James "Jim" Wisniewski did not survive the accident and a third, Greg Rouleau, is still in the ICU at an Atlanta hospital. We are all in the healthcare business and often may be somewhat immune to the daily personal tragedies that occur inside the walls of the hospitals that we serve until they take a personal turn.
